  About Voyageur

Background

Voyageur Media Group, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the creation of public media projects about science, history and culture. Our primary geographic focus extends from the Ohio River Valley to the Great Lakes. Voyageur's production team travels throughout these regions to gather research, document investigations and conduct interviews with experts from a diverse range of backgrounds and professional fields.

Voyageur's archival library includes several award-winning documentaries: the Ohio Archaeology series, a comprehensive media project about the state's ancient American Indian cultures; the Kentucky Archaeology series, documentary shorts about scientific research in the Bluegrass state; The Will to Read: Estel Sizemore's Story, a documentary about one man's inspirational efforts to overcome illiteracy and dyslexia; and Searching for the Great Hopewell Road, a documentary about new research into monumental earthworks of the ancient Ohio Hopewell culture. These documentary projects often include companion books and websites with educational resources designed for viewers, teachers and students.

  Board of Trustees
Voyageur's Board of Trustees is composed of nine individuals with a range of professional skills and personal experiences. The Board of Trustees meets on a quarterly basis to provide direction, goals and administer media projects. Voyageur raises funds from public agencies, private foundations and individual contributors. The organization conducts an internal audit on a bi-annual basis. A significant amount of our resources are in the form of in-kind services donated by allied scholars, nonprofit organizations and corporations that support the arts, humanities and public education.

  Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know when your programs are broadcast?

Voyageur provides its programs to regional or national public television stations for broadcast and distribution to schools via statewide instructional television systems. We attempt to gather premiere broadcast dates for posting on this website, but check your local public television station for broadcast dates and times. Voyageur's programs often repeat over a period of three to four years.

May I record Voyageur's programs off air for personal or education use?

Yes. You may record any program off-air (broadcast or cable) for personal use. Voyageur's programs are also provided to public television stations with unlimited educational rights, which allows teachers to record a program off-air or through instructional television systems for classroom and other educational uses. Public education is our mission.

    Does Voyageur have a newsletter?

Yes. Voyageur sends out an annual newsletter to our funders, allied scholars and other participants. Let us know if you would like to be added to this mail list, which is not released to third parties.

    Does Voyageur accept contributions?

Yes. Voyageur is a 501c3 nonprofit organization. We accept contributions for the development of our educational media projects. Contributions are tax deductible to the extent of state and federal law.

How does Voyageur select its projects?

Voyageur's Board of Trustees selects projects through a formal presentation process. Project Directors, who are responsible for fundraising, project development and reporting, present concepts to the Board of Trustees at quarterly meetings. The merits of these proposals are reviewed using such criteria as public need, our core mission, content and creativity, funding feasibility, educational outreach, co-production alliances and a clear path for public distribution.

Does Voyageur accept outside project proposals?

Voyageur does not solicit formal project proposals, but our production team would be glad to listen to your ideas for public media projects about science, history, art or culture. We have accumulated plenty of experience along the production road, and may be able to provide you with some relevant advice. Voyageur's door is also open to organizations that seek a vendor or co-production partner for their public media projects.
