Ohio Archaeology: An Illustrated Chronicle of Ohio's
Ancient American Indian Cultures won the prestigious "Public
Audience Book Award" at the national conference of the
Society for American Archaeology in Austin, Texas on April
27.
This national award from a distinguished professional association
is a "significant honor for the many scholars, institutions
and funders that collaborated on this project," according
to Tom Law, Project Director, Ohio Archaeology, Voyageur Media
Group. Inc. Voyageur, a nonprofit organization, led the development
of Ohio Archaeology, which was published by Orange Frazer
Press, Wilmington, Ohio. Dr. Bradley T. Lepper, Curator of
Archaeology, Ohio Historical Society, wrote the main text
of this 300-page, fully illustrated book, with contributions
from twenty-three regional archaeologists, historians and
tribal scholars.
The Society for American Archaeology is an international organization
with more than 7,000 members dedicated to "the research,
interpretation, and protection of the archaeological heritage
of the Americas." The SAA presented an award in two divisions,
"Public Audience" and "Academic," for
a recently published book that "has made, or is expected
to make, a substantial contribution to the presentation of
the goals, methods, and results of archaeological research
to a more general public." Presented to the author, the
2007 SAA award recognizes Dr. Bradley T. Lepper "for
his balanced presentation of a spectacular archaeological
record."
"This book presents the sweep of Ohio's ancient past
in a highly accessible, beautifully illustrated format. With
sidebars by leading experts in the archaeology of Ohio, the
full sweep of the state's archaeology is presented in a compelling
way. Approaches to contemporary archaeological research are
presented alongside a summary of the culture history, making
this useful for teaching. The large-scale format and profuse
illustrations - many in color - makes this an especially appealing
book for the general public."

Ohio Archaeology has earned widespread critical and professional
acclaim, says Tom Law. We are especially gratified by the
comments of many educators who praise the book as a valuable
resource for helping students understand Ohio's rich cultural
heritage.
The first edition of Ohio Archaeology is projected to sell
out by the end of the year. A limited number of copies are
available at regional bookstores, museum stores and at the
website of Orange Frazer Press (www.orangefrazer.org).
